Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream? ~ Edgar Allan Poe, A Dream Within A Dream.
Like fleeting thoughts
On ephemeral nights,
Like icicle tears,
And blinding lights.
Like molten silver,
Solid gold,
Like dying warm,
And living cold,
Like burning fires,
Embers dead,
Like perfect lies,
And things unsaid.
They say:
Humans come and humans go,
Good times too and strife,
But what if we haven’t woken up
from a dream we call our life?

Excellent writing, thanks a lot for the lovely post.🌹👍🙏

Perfection, Shanu! Your poem is beautifully constructed, and the ideas are expressed so well!
I like the Poe quote. I read a lot of his work when I was in high school. My sister compared Poe’s “Masque of the Red Death” to COVID19, which I thought was brilliant! What do you think?
All the best! Cheryl

Ah. Thank you so much Cheryl. Those are beautiful words. I’m so glad you like it.
I have been an absolute lover of Poe’s works especially his poems. The only story of his that I read was that of the cat. Thanks to you, I read the masque of the red death now, and I can why your sister must have compared it to the global pandemic. Absolutely clever.
It was such wonderful talking to you. Finally found someone who loves Edgar Allan Poe equally well. (Do you? I got the feel)
All the best.

Yeah. Maybe just maybe. I couldn’t agree. I happened to have watched Inception and also read a dream within a dream, so was truly inspired. Who knows? Let’s live this dream until then.

I see the dream weaving an adorable dream to succeed in defining its own existence…..the contrasting senses cohabit in it to let the life own up what it has so long reigned crownlessly…..
Your words are magical….the rhythm is lyrical….and it shines with intellectual honesty…
It brings me to see myself facing my chained dreams, still expecting a liberation….trusting so passionately….am I a dreamer or a dream chaser….life shall slowly script it now, I know
Thanks for inspiring my expressions….

Hi Saibal.
Your comment has left me stunned. It is so kind and evocative. I’m so so grateful for these words of immense encouragement and pure honesty. Nothing brings a wider smile to the face of a writer than comments like yours.
I’m actually even glad how right you’ve gotten the meaning of this poem. The contradictions eventually work themselves out, but maybe it is a dream within a dream.
No thank you is ever enough for these words, but I guess, it’s the least I can do. So thank you friend and have a wonderful day.
Warm regards,
Shanyu.

Thank you so much D. The Edgar Allan Poe couplet really got me thinking the other day if everything around us is just twisted reality, or if it’s reality at all? Maybe we’re just dreams, maybe.
Thank you for the visit. Peace.
